Under the EPS 1995 rules still shown by EPFO, you can get a pension at 58 with at least 10 work years counted towards it. EPS 2026 has replaced EPS 1995. EPFO has not yet confirmed its pension-age rule, so check with EPFO. EPFO's Citizens' Charter set a 7-working-day target for pension claims in November 2022. Its review date, November 2023, has passed, so this is a 2022 target, not a payment date.

What it is

Under the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 (EPS), a member can get a pension at 58 with at least 10 years of counted service. EPFO's pension page still shows these rules (last updated 27 October 2026). Starting earlier or later changes the amount. A PIB (the government's Press Information Bureau) note posted on 31 October 2026 says a new EPS 2026 has replaced EPS 1995. EPFO has not yet shown the EPS 2026 pension-age rules on its pension page. Ask EPFO whether these rules still apply to you before you decide.

Raju's example: a pension at 58

For example, Raju is a factory worker reaching 58 with exactly 10 years of counted EPS service, all after September 2014. Suppose his monthly basic pay stayed at ₹14,000 throughout, with no other pensionable pay, and his workplace used the 12% contribution rate. These made-up figures illustrate the EPS 1995 rules described on this page.

  1. Raju's monthly contribution to EPF savings ₹1,680 a month 12% × ₹14,000 = ₹1,680
  2. His employer's monthly EPF and EPS contribution ₹1,680 a month 12% × ₹14,000 = ₹1,680
  3. Employer's share going to the EPS pension fund About ₹1,166 a month 8.33% × ₹14,000 = ₹1,166, rounded
  4. Employer's remaining share going to EPF savings About ₹514 a month (12% − 8.33%) × ₹14,000 = ₹514, rounded
  5. Government support going to the pension fund About ₹162 a month 1.16% × ₹14,000 = ₹162, rounded
  6. Monthly pension under the EPS 1995 formula at 58 ₹2,000 a month ₹14,000 × 10 ÷ 70 = ₹2,000

Under this EPS 1995 illustration, Raju's pension works out to ₹2,000 a month at 58, with no early-start cut. Before relying on this amount or age, he must ask EPFO whether these rules apply to him under EPS 2026.

The official rule: The page's EPS 1995 rule requires at least 10 years of counted service for pension at 58. Monthly pension is pensionable salary × pensionable service ÷ 70; contributions support the fund rather than determine an individual pension balance. The employer pays 8.33% into EPS and government support is 1.16% of wages up to ₹15,000, as explained in the official pension-formula note Official page

Raju and his figures are an example; the rule is the official one.

Who gets it

  • EPS members checking pension eligibility at 58.
  • Members comparing an earlier or later pension.
  • Members whose pension service falls below 10 years.
  • You can get it if you are an EPS member with at least 10 years of work counted towards your pension.
  • You can get it if you reach 58, even when you continue working.
  • You cannot get it if your counted service falls below 10 years, under the retirement pension rules explained here.
  • You can get it if you leave employment between 50 and 57, meet the service requirement, and accept a smaller pension.

Examples: who gets it

Ravi, 58, factory worker

His EPS record contains 12 years of counted service.

Gets it

He meets the normal pension age and minimum service requirement.

Meena, 58, shop worker

Her EPS record contains eight years of counted service.

Does not get it

She falls short of the retirement pension service requirement and can seek a withdrawal benefit.

Salim, 57, machine operator

He has left employment with 15 years of counted EPS service.

Gets it

He can choose an early pension with a reduction, or wait until the normal pension age.

Your options

Regular pension at 58
Age 58, with at least 10 years of counted service

Your pension has no early-start reduction. Ordinary pension membership ends at 58. If you delay your pension, the rules let you keep paying in until 60.

At 58 with 10 or more years of counted service: no early-start cut.

Start pension earlier
Age 50 to 57, after leaving employment

The rule cuts pension by 4% for each year before 58. Once approved, the reduced pension does not become full pension at 58.

Starting at 55 means 3 years early, so the pension is cut by 12%.

Start pension later
After 58, up to age 60

The rule adds 4% for each completed year after 58. Members still working can also choose continued pension contributions under the delay rules.

Waiting until 59 without further contributions: the pension rises by 4%.

Take a payment for shorter service
Below 10 years of counted service

You can seek a withdrawal benefit instead of a monthly retirement pension. Its amount follows the scheme's payment rules.

Shorter service → a payment rather than monthly retirement pension.

Preserve shorter service
Below 10 years of counted service and younger than 58

You can choose a Scheme Certificate instead of taking the payment. This keeps your pension service available for later covered employment.

Earlier covered work + later covered work → service considered together.

Starting one year early: a simple example

₹2,000 a month Assumed regular pension This is an example, not a promised pension amount.
₹80 less Start at 57 One year early means a 4% reduction in this example.
₹1,920 Reduced monthly pension The early-start reduction continues after 58.

A one-year example using the early-pension rule in the scheme text: 4% less for each year before 58.

How to claim it

  1. Open Check Eligibility
On EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation)'s home page, select Check Eligibility under Grow Your Retirement Savings.
    Open this page
  2. Read Membership
Read Membership on the pension page.
    Open this page
  3. Read the Monthly Member's Pension rule
This rule in the Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995 text sets the pension age of 58, early pension from 50 and later pension up to 60. EPFO's FAQs also answer pension-age questions.
    Open this page
  4. After the last step
EPFO's Citizens' Charter lists Form-10D for monthly pension claims.
Ask EPFO how to claim now and which documents to attach.
The charter aims to settle a monthly pension claim in 7 working days. The scheme rules allow up to 20 days.
The charter was issued in November 2022 and its review date (November 2023) has passed. Its 7-day target is a goal, not a promised payment date.
With too few work years counted towards your pension, ask about a payment instead of a monthly pension or a Scheme Certificate before choosing.
Use EPFiGMS, EPFO's complaint service, for complaints about your pension record or claim, keeping the complaint reference to check progress.

If something goes wrong

Your work record is close to 10 years
Ask EPFO to confirm your work years counted towards your pension before choosing a payment instead of a monthly pension. The rules round service periods, so calendar years alone can mislead.
You expect full pension after starting early
An approved early pension stays reduced. Compare the smaller payment with waiting until 58 before you decide.
You changed jobs and some service seems missing
Ask EPFO to check your earlier work years counted towards your pension and any Scheme Certificate recording them. Changing jobs does not mean you have to lose those years.
Someone asks for your OTP or password
Never share a one-time password (OTP) or password with anyone who calls or messages. Use EPFO's official help channels.
